City Tells Smart City Story to New Zealand Conference Delegates

Fredericton (February 19, 2008) - The City of Fredericton, recently named one of the world's Top 7 Intelligent Communities, has been invited to tell its story to delegates attending an international conference in Wellington, New Zealand today through the magic of teleconferencing.

Mayor Brad Woodside will address the conference this evening from Bangkok, Thailand where he is currently participating in Federation of Canadian Municipalities international development program. Don Fitzgerald, Executive Director of Team Fredericton, the city's economic development arm; Maurice Gallant, Chief Information Officer and Assistant Director of  Corporate Services; and Alycia Morehouse, the City's Green Coordinator,  will join the conference via an audio-video hook-up from the Wu Conference Centre on the University of New Brunswick campus.

"This is a great chance to tell an international conference about the great things that are happening in our City," said Mayor Woodside. "To be able to do so from a great distance by using technology is another reason why we have earned the reputation as one of the world's smartest cities."

Two videos, highlighting Fredericton as an intelligent community and a wireless city, will be included in Fredericton's presentation to the conference delegates.

Mr. Gallant will address the conference on the City's broadband projects while Mr. Fitzgerald will discuss the city's economic development and sustainability and Ms. Morehouse will speak about Fredericton's "First to Kyoto" Green Matters campaign.

Local Government New Zealand is hosting the two-day forum, which aims to clarify local government's role in broadband deployment and the Digital Strategy agenda within local communities. Among those attending the event are New Zealand's Minister of Communications David Cunliffe and Telecom CEO Paul Reynolds.

In January, the City of Fredericton was the only city in Canada to be named to the top seven of Intelligent Communities in the world by the Intelligent Community Forum. Fredericton joins Northeast Ohio; Westchester County, New York; Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Dundee, Scotland; Gangnam District, Seoul, South Korea;  and Tallinn, Estonia in the top seven category.  The Intelligent Community of the Year will be named in New York City on May 16, 2008
