Councillor Whalen Appointed Deputy Mayor

Photo of Tony WhalenFredericton (May 26, 2008) - Councillor Tony Whalen was appointed to a one-year term as Deputy Mayor of Fredericton today as City Council held its first meeting of its new mandate.

Deputy Mayor Whalen, who served as Chair of the City's Public Safety and Environment Committee during his first term, was nominated to the Deputy Mayor post by Mayor Woodside and the new Council made it official with a unanimous show of hands.

This is Deputy Mayor Whalen's second term on Council. He was unopposed in the May 12 election and was re-elected by acclamation.

A Senior Drinking Water Approvals Engineer with the Provincial Department of Environment, he received a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick in 1994. He also holds memberships in a variety of organizations including the Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of NB, the Professional Institute of Public Service of Canada, the Atlantic Canada Water Works Association, and the Maritime Provinces Water & Wastewater Association.

Deputy Mayor Whalen is a former Chair of the Public Safety and Environment Committee and Vice-Chair of the Information Technology Committee.  He is a former member of the Superannuation Board, the Cities of New Brunswick Association and Co-Chair of the Mayor's Working Committee on Community/University Relations.

In his role as Deputy Mayor he will be called upon to fill in for Mayor Brad Woodside upon occasion. Mayor Woodside is an ex-officio member of all of the City's Standing Committees, a role that Deputy Mayor Whalen will fill in the mayor's absence.
