Fredericton Enjoying Many Successes Says Mayor in State of the City Address

Grant-Harvey Design Unveiled; Torch Bearer Introduced; Holland College Partnership Announced

Fredericton, NB (November 19, 2009) – Mayor Brad Woodside provided a broad overview of the many exciting things happening in the City of Fredericton and his thoughts about the City’s future during the annual State of the City Address.

Photo of Grant-Harvey Centre DesignThe event was held at the Delta Fredericton Hotel and sponsored by the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce.  During his speech, Mayor Woodside made three announcements.

As promised in last year’s State of the City address, he unveiled the design for the new Grant-Harvey Centre on Knowledge Park Drive.  The new regional arena facility will include two ice surfaces, one NHL and one Olympic, as well as a community room and walking track.  The construction tender for the new facility will be issued Photo of Marianne Limpertearly in 2010.

Mayor Woodside also took the opportunity to introduce local Olympian Marianne Limpert, who will be the final torch bearer for the Fredericton leg of the Olympic Torch Relay.  A Community Celebration to welcome the torch will be held at Officers’ Square on November 25 starting at 6 pm.

Looking ahead to 2010, Mayor Woodside announced a partnership between Holland College and the City of Fredericton to deliver a basic firefighter Holland College Logotraining course at the City’s new Public Safety Training Facility.  The 14-week course will begin in April 2009 and will be formally approved by City Council next week.
