This is the first step in a broader review of the City’s Zoning By-law, which is intended to ensure that the standards set forth in the bylaw are reflective of the policies of the latest Capital City Municipal Plan, adopted by Fredericton City Council in January 2007.  The signage regulations, which form “Section 7, Signage” of the bylaw, were last updated in conjunction with a full review of the Zoning By-law in 1995.  Existing signs, for which sign permits have been obtained, will continue to be permitted.

“Industry standards are different and the scale and types of signage available have changed since the bylaw was first adopted fifteen years ago,” said Coun. Stephen Chase, Chair of the City’s Development Committee.  “I would encourage business owners and city residents to participate in this important public consultation process.”

In preparation for the review, and in an effort to identify and address signage issues, City staff have reviewed the current signage regulations taking into consideration variance and zoning amendment applications submitted to the Planning Advisory Committee and City Council since 1995.  They have also looked at the standards and practices from other communities.

Information about the proposed changes will be posted to the City’s web site as part of the public consultation process.  Written comments may be submitted online or in hard copy to the Development Services Department once the suggested changes are released.  The deadline to submit comments will be September 10, 2010.

It is intended that a final draft of the regulations, reflective of public comments where applicable, will make its way to the Planning Advisory Committee and on to City Council in October of this year.  For more information, please contact the Development Services Department at 460-2075 or e-mail.
