Pet Ownership
You Are Responsible for Your Pet's Behaviour - Be A Good Neighbour
Did You Know That:
- According to By-law No. S-11, A By-Law Respecting Animal Control, an "animal" is defined to mean a domestic animal and includes cats and dogs! Animals are not allowed to run at large. Animals not on their owner's property must be secured by a leash no more than 2 metres long and under the control of the owner.
- Pet owners must not allow their animals to defecate on any property other than their own. If the animal does, please "stoop and scoop". Feces of both cats and dogs can transmit disease to humans and other pets. This may cause serious illness.
- Owners must not allow their animals to cause damage to property, which is not the property of the owner.
- No person shall have, keep or possess more than 2 dogs in a household, unless such possession is in compliance with Section 6, (Kennels) of By-law No. S-11.
- Owners of dogs must register their pets with the City and pay a license fee on or before December 31st every year. Owners must make sure that registered dogs have dog tags on their collar. A City Dog Tag ensures that if your pet is lost, it can be returned to you and the public can easily identify that your dog has been protected against rabies. Vaccination services are available at the vet clinics. At City Hall you will be required to present proof of rabies vaccination before purchasing the dog tag.
- Dog owners must not permit their dog(s) to cause a public nuisance by barking or howling. Owners must also prevent their dogs from running and barking and thereby annoying pedestrians or drivers of motor vehicles or bicycles.
- Dog owners must not permit their dog(s) to bite or attempt to bite a person. Dog owners must not permit their dog(s) to act in an aggressive or terrorizing manner, approach any person in an apparent attitude of attack upon any street, sidewalk or public grounds or places, or on private property other than the property of the owner.
- A dog may be deemed "dangerous" by the Animal Control Officer if it has attacked a person or has killed, bitten or injured another animal. The owner of a dangerous dog must comply with the special requirements in Section 4 of the Animal Control By-law.
- An Animal Control Officer may impound any animal found running at large or that appears to be abandoned. Impounded animals are housed at the SPCA at 165 Hilton Road. Owners may pick up an impounded animal upon proof of ownership and payment of all applicable fees. If an unlicensed dog is impounded, in addition to the impound fee and any fines, the owner must also pay for a dog license prior to the animals release.
