York House Repurposing

NOTE:  The City would like to thank everyone who participated in the public input for the repurposing of York House. The allotted time for public input has concluded.

Pnoto of York HouseAfter careful review, the City of Fredericton has determined that the original intent to convert historic York House, in downtown Fredericton, into municipal offices is not financially viable. As a result of these developments, City Council has tasked a working group with finding other feasible uses for the building.

An effort is now underway to seek the community’s views and input on possible uses for York House in either a public or private context. Repurposing efforts must ensure that the exterior of the building maintain its historic look and is self-sustaining, requiring no ongoing funding from the City of Fredericton.

The following web page has been set to guide the process. It includes an online consultation form, available zoning information, floor plans for the building, a site plan, the historic statement of significance for the property, and the terms of reference for the working group.

Additional information on this process can be obtained in the RELATED CONTENT section at the left side of the page.

York House in Brief

York House was constructed in 1893 as the York Street School and also served as the Fredericton High School until 1925.  As a result of public concern about the proposed demolition of York House in 2006, the City of Fredericton purchased the building late in 2007 with the intent of converting the building into municipal offices.  The building was added to the City of Fredericton's Local Historic Places Register in July 2009.
