Fredericton (November 20, 2007) - The role affordable housing plays in making a community stronger and more sustainable will be explored November 22 during Fredericton's first Affordable Housing Day public seminar at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
The event is being hosted by the City of Fredericton's Ad Hoc Committee on Affordable Housing, along with its partners the New Brunswick Department of Family and Community Services, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, New Brunswick Non-Profit Housing Association and Service Canada.
"November 22 is Affordable Housing Day in Fredericton and also National Housing Day across Canada so this is an ideal time to focus on the partnerships required to develop innovative affordable housing solutions," said Fredericton City Councillor Mike O'Brien, who chairs the City's Affordable Housing Committee.
Guest speaker for the event will be Emilie K. Adin, Deputy Director of Planning for the City of Langford, B.C. She has spoken about urban design, affordable housing, and sustainable development across North America. She will focus her remarks on the lessons learned from the Langford Affordable Housing experience.
Other guest speakers include Fredericton Mayor Brad Woodside; the Honourable Eugene McGinley, New Brunswick's Minister of State for Housing and Seniors; and Carolyn Cavanaugh, General Manager of the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Atlantic Business Centre.
Their remarks will be followed by a panel discussion of local approaches to affordable housing. Panelists include: Penny Higgs, N.B. Department of Family and Community Services; Caroline Arsenault, from CMHC; Alex Arsenault, N.B. Non-Profit Housing Association; and developer Eldon Toner, Canadian Home Builders Association.
The half-day conference will run from 8:15 a.m. until noon and will be held in the Saint John Room of the Crowne Plaza, 659 Queen Street, Fredericton. It begins with a Meet & Greet complimentary Continental breakfast.
The City's Ad Hoc Committee on Affordable Housing operates under the auspices of City Council and includes representatives of various partners and stakeholder groups involved in housing. Its mandate is to raise the awareness of affordable housing issues and to encourage the development of affordable housing in Fredericton through partnerships.
