The men and women who serve aboard the HMCS Fredericton have maintained a close relationship with their namesake City ever since the Canadian Navy Patrol Frigate was commissioned in 1994.
During regular visits to Fredericton the crew has also volunteered countless hours of their own time doing repair work at their own cost and helping out the staff at Transition House, a shelter for abused women and their children. The crew also ices a competitive ice hockey team that plays exhibition games occasionally against the Fredericton Police Force team.
The Commander of the ship pays regular courtesy calls on the Mayor's Office and has hosted delegations from the City on-board the ship at its home port of Halifax.
The HMCS Fredericton is one of the most advanced general-purpose frigates in the world. One of 12 frigates built for the Canadian Navy in the 1990s, it was constructed in Saint John and commissioned in September 1994. It is the second Canadian Navy ship to bear the City's name. The original was a "Flower" class corvette that escorted Atlantic convoys during the Second World War.
