Fredericton (November 13, 2008) - The second annual Fredericton Affordable Housing Day conference will be held November 18 at the Killarney Lake Rotary Centennial Lodge, 1600 St. Mary's Street, Fredericton from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event, which coincides with National Housing Day, is being hosted by the City of Fredericton, along with its partners - the New Brunswick Department of Social Development, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and Service Canada.
"It's going to be a day a day of information sharing and discussion about the important role that affordable housing plays in making our community stronger and how the whole community benefits when all Frederictonians have access to affordable housing," said Councillor Mike O'Brien, chair of the City's Ad Hoc Committee on Affordable Housing. "We will focus on examples of innovative affordable housing solutions, the benefits of affordable housing, the partnerships required and the impact of not providing a sufficient supply."
The Theme of the day-long conference is "What's In It For Me?" It will be facilitated by Jacques Paynter, AMEC Earth and Environmental. Guest speakers include Mary Schryer, N.B. Minister of State for Housing and Minister of Social Development and her Deputy Minister, James Hughes as well as Carolyn Kavanagh, General Manager, CMHC Atlantic Business Centre; Jim Woods, Director of Citizen Services, Service Canada; Ed Power, Power Developments & Consultants, St. John's, Nfld; Anthony Knight, Fredericton Chamber of Commerce; and Alex Arseneau, New Brunswick Non-Profit Housing Association.
The conference will also feature testimonials from affordable housing clients.
The event is being organized by the City's Affordable Housing Committee. Created by Fredericton City Council in November 2006, the Committee acts as an advocate for the homeless, the working poor and those with special housing needs to improve their quality of life through affordable housing. It serves as a coordinator for the stakeholder agencies and links those living with the problem to those who can provide solutions.
The committee draws its membership from the municipal, provincial and federal governments, community groups, off-reserve aboriginal groups and housing developers dedicated to improving access to affordable housing in the City of Fredericton.
