Fredericton Street Name to Commemorate Victims of Domestic Violence

The name is significant in that it is part of a nationwide effort by City of Iqaluit Mayor Elisapee Sheutiapik to have each Capital City in Canada use the name "Angel" in a street name as a way of paying tribute to victims of domestic violence.  Iqaluit's City Council approved the name Angel Street for a road in their city in August 2007.

"I was immediately drawn to the idea when I first heard about it at a Canadian Capital Cities Organization meeting," said Coun. Marilyn Kerton, the City of Fredericton's representative to the Capital Cities organization.

"It is especially appropriate that we announce this during Family Violence Prevention Month here in New Brunswick, when the NB Silent Witness silhouettes are on display in the Fredericton City Hall Council Chamber."

The name "Angel Street" comes from a song recorded by Inuit singer / songwriter, Lucie Idlout and originally entitled "Lovely Irene."  The song tells the story of a young abused woman named Irene, and rings true for anyone who has experienced abuse in their lives.

Angel Crescent will be one of the new streets in a planned residential development located on Sumac Street, a former industrial property owned by JD Irving.  Once developed, the project will include approximately 100 single family, duplex and modular units, as well as a neighbourhood park.
