Seven Applicants Share $100,000 Cultural Capitals Program Funding
Fredericton (January 20, 2009) - Seven projects have been selected for funding under the City's $100,000 Cultural Capitals of Canada Culture program. The seven successful projects, selected from among 24 applications, were announced today during the January meeting of the City's Development Committee.
"There were many great applications for worthy projects and it was hard for the Jury of five to turn down many of the requests," said Councillor Dan Keenan. "I'm looking forward to seeing all of these worthwhile projects become reality in the coming months."
Following is a list of the successful applicants:
Beaverbrook Art Gallery - First Nations Art and Culture Interpretive Program ($20,000)
The Beavebrook Art Gallery will host a major exhibition this summer which examines the art of Shirley Bear, of the First Nation in Tobique. The exhibit features paintings, prints, drawings, photographs and installation work covering the artist's work over a 40-year period. In addition to the Shirley Bear exhibit, the Gallery will also feature a major exhibition of the work of 30 New Brunswick Maliseet and Mi'kmaq artists. This will be the first of its kind in NB and will also involve several interpretive activities during the exhibit.
Musical Ventures - A Musical Legacy: A Celebration of Fredericton Composers ($20,000)
This project will create a lasting tribute to the area's talented composers through the ages. The project will consist of live public concerts performed by our most talented artists, recordings, and an interactive website. The project also involves a commission of a new musical work from a Fredericton composer.
This is a partnership between Christ Church Cathedral, UNB's Centre for Musical Arts, and will involve professional musicians, choristers and music educators.
Fredericton Heritage Trust - Heritage Audio Walking Tours ($15,000)
Fredericton Heritage Trust, in partnership with several community organizations, will produce four 30-minute guided walks of heritage neighbourhoods using audio technology. The tours, two on each side of the St. John River will highlight colourful historic sites and buildings and their associated urban legends. The audio guides will be available in a variety of digital formats so that residents and visitors may access it through hand held devices, laptops and MP3 players.
N.B. Fine Crafts Council - React: A Craft Artist's Response to the Provincial Capital ($15,000)
The N.B. Crafts Council will put out a call to its juried members to create work for an exhibition for the Government House Gallery this summer. Craft artists from around the province will be asked to conceptualize and create work in their medium that addresses issues relevant to the capital City. Brigitte Clavette, acclaimed metal smith and instructor at the N.B. College of Craft and Design will curate the exhibit which will articulate how the capital city is viewed and understood by craft artists living within and outside its boundaries.
NotaBle Act Theatre Company - Provincial Theatre Exchange between Fredericton & Caraquet ($15,000)
The NotaBle Acts Theatre Festival will partner with a French language theatre company to present the first ever provincial theatre exchange program between anglophone and francophone playwrights from New Brunswick. NB Acts translate, develop and produce a French language Play, Disponibles en libraire (On and Off the Shelf) by Marcel-Romain Theriault, an Acadian playwright. It is an exchange between Theatre Populaire d'Acadie in Caraquet, which is also a Cultural Capital of Canada in 2009.
Chinese Cultural Association of NB - The Night of a Thousand Lanterns ($7,500)
This event, based on one of China's widely recognized cultural icons, the Chinese lanterns, will culminate in a parade of lanterns along the streets of downtown Fredericton followed by a lantern festival in Officers Square. Members of the Chinese Cultural Association of NB, active for over 30 years, will engage in a project with local school children to deliver workshops on the culture and history of Chinese Lantern Festivals, and hands-on learning of the creation of Chinese lanterns.
York Sunbury Museum - Satellite Exhibits: Boss Gibson the Industrialist ($7,500)
The Museum will produce two satellite exhibits for display at the Marysville Heritage Centre and the Devon Trail Visitor Centre. The 'Boss's Town' exhibit in the Marysville Heritage Centre will explore the relationship between Gibson, the people of Marysville, and the development of the Marysville community. The exhibit at the Devon Trail Centre will explore the railway heritage of Devon and the train station and roundhouses once in the area.
The $100,000 Fredericton Cultural Capital Grant Program is one of 15 projects announced last Fall to celebrate the City's selection by the Department of Canadian Heritage as a 2009 Cultural Capitals of Canada.
