Three Fredericton locations nominated for Great Places in Canada Contest

Photo of FrederictonFredericton (February 6) – For a second year in a row, Fredericton has been nominated for inclusion in the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) Great Places in Canada contest.  The three Fredericton locations nominated include Queen Street, Officers’ Square and Marysville.

The competition encourages Canadians from across the country to nominate and vote for their favorite location.  Voting takes place online and the results are tallied in real time. Last year, some 75,000 votes were received.

“It’s always a matter of pride when the city of Fredericton gets nominated for something like this,” said Fredericton Mayor Brad Woodside. “It’s not only about having locations people love and look forward to visiting, but it‘s also a chance for our residents to get excited and share with everybody their favourite places.”

The nomination of Marysville comes at a special time as it celebrates its 150th anniversary since Alexander “Boss” Gibson founded the community on the Nashwaak River.

Last year, Commercial Street in Nanaimo, BC, was named Canada’s great street; Le Petit Champlain in Quebec City, QC, won as Canada’s great neighbourhood; and The Forks in Winnipeg, MB, was honoured as Canada’s great public space. Fredericton’s Officers’ Square was nominated for the list in 2011.

The contest was launched on November 29, 2011 and nominations came to an end on January 31, 2012. Voting takes place until February 29, 2012. The judges will then decide on the semi-finalists in early April and announce the winners at the end of April 2012.
