Casemates Exhibition at City Hall Gallery Opens Thursday, September 4

Photo of Casemates Exhibition at City Hall Gallery Opens Thursday, September Fredericton (August 26, 2008) - An exhibit of artworks produced during the Fredericton Arts Alliance summer artist-in-residence series opens at the City Hall Gallery on September 4 at 5 p.m.

The exhibition will feature works in a variety of media including: a book of poetry, a mask carving, pottery, oil paintings, needlepoint, photography and more.    Featured artists include:  Sadiq Ali, Joanne Barfitt, Ned Bear, Jackie Bourque, Carol Collicutt, Derek Davidson, Jesse Ferguson, Oliver Flecknell, William Forrestall, Amber Friedman, Chris Giles, Paula Keppie, Andrew Miller, Deanna Musgrave, Sarah Petite, Shanie Stozek, and Amy Sullivan.

Each of the 18 local artists included in this exhibition spent a week as an artist-in-residence in the casemates of the Soldiers' Barracks in downtown Fredericton. During this time in their temporary outdoor studio space, artists created while also providing the public with an opportunity to talk with the artists, learn about their inspiration and creation, and witness professional art in the making.

Whitefeather Hunter, a mixed media artist and long time participant, is grateful for her time spent as artist-in-residence, "As an artist-in-residence at the casemates each summer, I've had incredible opportunities present themselves which are crucial to my development as an artist," she said.

Whitefeather won the Sheila Hugh MacKay Foundation Scholarship in 2008 (to support NB artists entering graduate studies in visual arts).  She says these opportunities include, "meeting other artists in Fredericton and from 'away', making contact with art appreciators who have suggested far-away galleries that would like my work, maintaining a high level of visibility in my own arts community and just having the chance to set aside some time to work on my own projects."

During each rotation, an emerging artist was paired with an established artist, providing an additional developmental experience for the artists. Maria Bourgeois, Fredericton Arts Alliance Coordinator, considers the series an integral way to bridge artists and community.  "It fulfills a desire to meet artists at work, to understand how and why they produce art and why art is important to the community."

She refers to a study commissioned by the Canada Council titled Building Public Engagement with the Arts, (POLLARA), which states residents of New Brunswick prefer art events where they can meet and talk to artists.  In fact, 77 per cent of New Brunswickers like the opportunity to see an artist at work.

"The opportunity to meet and talk to artists is why the annual artists-in-residence summer series in Fredericton is such a success,' say Bourgeois.

The final Downtown Fredericton Culture Crawl of the season also runs from 5 until 8 p.m. on September 4. Visitors can start their evening at the City Hall Gallery then take advantage of free admission to galleries around downtown.  For those unable to attend the opening, the exhibition continues until October 31.

Fredericton City Hall Gallery is located in City Hall, at 397 Queen Street. Gallery hours run from Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. There is no charge for admission. For more information about the exhibit, please call 460- 2411.
