City Wins 2009 Economic Development Champion Award

Photo of City Wins 2009 Economic Development Champion AwardFredericton (June 29, 2009) –The City of Fredericton has been named winner of the 2009 Economic Development Champion Award by Enterprise Fredericton. The announcement was made by Board Chairman Mark Wies during Enterprise Fredericton’s recent biannual Community Advisory Forum.

“In these trying times, economic development and growth in the Fredericton region is more important than ever,” said Mr. Wies. “This award is a symbol of leadership for past accomplishments and future plans to positively impact our community. We truly believe that the City of Fredericton has accomplished that through its many initiatives, creating an environment conducive to sustainable economic growth, and is most deserving of this award.”

The City of Fredericton was recognized for economic and community development initiatives, including:

·         The Intelligent Community Forum initiative – Top 7 ranking 2 years in a row

·         Immigration activities 

·         Development projects, including Willie O’Ree Place, the Grant • Harvey Centre and the Conference Centre in downtown Fredericton, and

·         Record construction in each of the past five years.

“This award acknowledges our commitment to being an economic development leader,” said City Councillor Mike O’Brien, who accepted the award on behalf of Mayor Brad Woodside and Council. “We will continue to work hard to ensure the future prosperity of our community.”

The Community Advisory Forum highlights the accomplishments of Enterprise Fredericton. It is focussed on the four pillars of its Community Growth Strategy - Population Growth, Community of Innovation, Business Retention & Expansion, and Investment Attraction Initiatives.

The next Community Advisory Forum will showcase Enterprise Fredericton’s 2009-2012 Community Growth Strategy, tentatively scheduled for the fall of 2009.
