Fredericton Featured on Google Cities in 3D Program

Photo of Fredericton Featured on Google Cities in 3D ProgramFredericton (March 11, 2010) – Fredericton has joined other cities from the around the world by becoming part of the Google Cities in 3D Program.  A case study on Fredericton’s involvement in this program was posted to Google’s SketchUp blog on March 10.  The Cities in 3D Program allows local governments to engage the public by featuring municipal buildings, landmarks and terrain on Google Earth.

The City of Fredericton was already using Google Earth for planning and other purposes.  As a result of a partnership with Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, the City had access to 3D building data.  When the municipality learned about Google's Cities in 3D Program, the decision was made to contribute data to Google for inclusion in Google Earth. Fredericton’s 3D entry in the program takes visitors on a fly over of the city’s historic downtown.

Google lists the following benefits for local governments to share 3D data:  engaging the public in planning, fostering economic development, boosting tourism, simplifying navigation and geographic analysis, enhancing facilities management, supporting security and crime prevention, and facilitating emergency management.
