Fredericton (January 12, 2009) - Three organizations that represent the City's business community were praised for their leadership and commitment to making the city greener during the first of a monthly series of Green Shops medal presentations by City Council.
The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Fredericton Inc. were both awarded Silver medals while Business Fredericton North received a Bronze medal for implementing a series of steps in that reduce their environmental impact during the first meeting of City Council in 2009.
"An ambitious program like Green Shops requires the support of the entire community and these three business organizations have not only committed their support, but they are leading by example," said Mayor Brad Woodside. "All three organizations have taken it upon themselves to whole-heartedly encourage all their member-businesses to equally commit themselves to greening Fredericton, and for that, we all thank you."
The Marriott Global Reservations Sales & Customer Care centre and Golf Green Condominiums received Gold Medals while the Delta Fredericton Hotel was awarded a Silver medal. Also being honoured was Gallery Opaque for becoming a member and committing to the goals of the program.
Green Shops encourages businesses to reduce their environmental impact by implementing a series of steps, all aimed at making the business more environmentally friendly and more profitable. The City's Green Matters team administers the program, awarding businesses credits for their actions leading to certification as a bronze, silver or gold Green Shop.
All participating Green Shops are given an official Fredericton Green Shops window decal to alert consumers of their commitment to the environment. Additional Bronze, Silver, and Gold Member decals are supplied when a participating business reaches the required credit threshold.
This is the second Green Shops medal ceremony. In October 2008, the program was officially launched after a successful pilot project. To date, there are 24 members in the program.
New Green Shops members will be recognized during the first council meetings of each month, as necessary, during the duration of the program. To learn more about the Green Shops program or to see a list of participating businesses, visit www.greenshopsfredericton.com.
Fredericton Green Shops is a voluntary program that is part of the City of Fredericton's Green Matters Campaign. The ultimate goal of the program is to reduce Fredericton's environmental impact through supporting, promoting and rewarding environmental stewardship within the business community.
