Photo of Extreme Heat Alert (LEVEL 3) is being issued for Thursday September 2Fredericton (September 2, 2010) - An Extreme Heat Alert (LEVEL 3) is being issued for Thursday September 2, 2010. The level of heat alert can be raised when the Humidex value remains consistently high for several days.  In this case, today is the third consecutive day of expected Humidex values in the 40-44 range, raising the level of alert from 2 to 3.   Peak Humidex values typically occur in the late afternoon, but today there may be some relief in late afternoon temperatures due increasing cloud.  Since Humidex values take into account both temperature and humidity, they are typically higher than the recorded temperature.

The alert remains in effect for Thursday September 2, 2010 only.  Alert levels are based on to the highest reasonable predictions at the time of issuance and on data specific to the city of Fredericton.  Humidex values in the city are typically higher than those recorded at the Fredericton airport.

Those most at risk for heat illness include older adults, children four-years-old and under, people who are overweight, and those with certain chronic medical conditions.  Care should be taken to ensure that those at highest risk of heat related illness are monitored and vulnerable members of our community are checked on regularly to ensure they are coping.  For more information, visit www.fredericton.ca/heatalert or http://www.gnb.ca/0217/heat-e.asp
