Open House May 3 for Proposed New Water Treatment Plant

FREDERICTON (April 23, 2007)  - The proposed design for a new water treatment plant at 300 Waterloo Row will be available for public viewing at 7 p.m. on May 3 as part of an information open house in City Hall Council Chamber.

"This Open House will allow the public an opportunity to talk one-on-one with our staff about the project and to see how we plan to incorporate the plant's design into the overall character of the neighbourhood," said Councillor Cathy MacLaggan. "Staff have worked hard to develop a design plan that fits the treatment process needs, and the wonderful heritage character of the neighbourhood. I salute the City staff for their care and diligence in the planning and especially the design for the project. I believe the proposed design for the building and landscaping for the grounds is something in which the citizens of Fredericton can take pride."

The new plant will be built at the intersection of Waterloo Row, the Lincoln Road and Forest Hill Road. The land is part of the St. Anne Point Heritage Preservation Area and was previously the site of a service station. The site required an environmental cleanup, and this has been completed to the satisfaction of the N.B. Environment Department.

As part of the approval process, the plan will be reviewed by the Preservation Review Board before being finally accepted by City Council.

The Preservation Review Board is a committee appointed by City Council. No development can take place within a heritage preservation area until a Certificate of Appropriateness has been issued by the Board.

"Our present water treatment plant on Smythe Street is in a heritage building, and our Water & Sewer Division does an excellent job of maintaining the building and grounds," said Coun. MacLaggan.

Construction of the new plant is necessary to ensure the City's water supply keeps pace with its future growth and development. It will be used to treat water from a new wellfield in the Queens Square area.

The Water Treatment Plant and the Wellfield Protection Program are essential elements of Fredericton's long term plan for providing a secure, reliable water supply for the City.

The proposed plant and new wells at Queens Square will provide approximately 180 litres per second of excellent quality drinking water, representing approximately a 45 per cent increase in the capacity of Fredericton's water supply over what can presently be provided from the Wilmot Park Wellfield and the existing water treatment plant.

Additional information about the proposed treatment plant is available on the City's website at  http://www.fredericton.ca/.....)
