WHAT IS COMPOST?
Compost is the result of a natural decaying process that involves billions of micro-organisms acting the way Mother Nature intended them to. These tiny creatures can transform grass clippings, garden refuse, kitchen scraps, fallen leaves and manure into biologically rich organic material that makes a great soil amendment. Compost in the garden means improved soil quality and healthier plants!
The volunteers behind the Fredericton Backyard Composters include a team of "Master Composters". These community residents have been trained in the biology of composting and in the basics of waste management so that they can help people with their composting efforts. They are also available to make presentations to interested community groups and schools about the importance of composting. Contact them if you are interested in receiving a presentation.
From Trash to Treasure
Did you know that composting can convert much of the "trash" that goes to landfills into a natural "treasure" for your garden? Up to 75% of household garbage is derived from organic matter and most of it can be composted. It's the natural way to recycle and the result is better than any fertilizer that you can buy at a garden centre.
