The Department of Engineering & Public Works is responsible for the collection and disposal of residential solid waste for the Municipality in accordance with By-Law No. W-4, A By-law to Regulate the Collection and Disposal of Garbage and Other Material.
Residential properties including single and double housing units, individual townhouse units, condominiums, apartment buildings with not more than four apartment units, and rooming houses with not more than 9 roomers.
Residential solid waste including garbage, combustible material, garden refuse and waste are collected as defined in By-Law W-4. Ashes, incombustible material, street rubbish, broken or discarded household furniture and furnishings, construction and demolition debris are not collected.
The Department works with a contractor, selected through a tender process, to carry out the collection of residential solid waste. The contractor collects waste on a specific day for each of five defined areas of the City (see map).
The Department places advertisements in the newspaper and uses Public Service Announcements to inform the Public of any changes to the schedule.
The Contractor delivers the residential solid waste to a landfill owned and operated by an independent authority, the Fredericton Region Solid Waste Commission, who manage the disposal under the auspices of the Clean Environment Act. The City of Fredericton appoints a representative to serve on the Commission's Board of Directors.
Waste received from the City's Contractor is weighed by the Commission who invoice the City for disposal on a tonnage basis referred to as the 'tipping fee'. This is a separate charge from the Contractor's fee for collection services.
The City of Fredericton provides an annual fall leaf pickup for its residents.
Leaves will be picked up on the resident's regular garbage day. The Fall Leaf Pickup does not include brush.
Property owners are requested to separate leaves from regular garbage (two separate piles).
Use orange or clear bags for leaves. Loose leaves will not be collected. Residents are asked not to rake loose leaves into the gutter.
Leaves collected are composted and used on landscape projects throughout the City.
Christmas trees are collected and used as raw material for compost. The City designates locations where residents may drop off their trees following the Christmas season. Staff of the Parks & Trees Division chip the trees at the drop off area and then transport the chips to the City's Compost facility.
The City of Fredericton provides an annual "Spring Yard Cleanup" program which is a special curbside pickup of residential yard waste held to coincide with that season when property owners are cleaning up their property. If at all possible, pickup will be done on the regular garbage day.
Anyone wishing to throw out yard waste should note the following guidelines:
- Separate limbs and branches from other refuse so they can be shredded. Branches should be no bigger than 5 cm x 1.5 m (2" x 5') and loose brush must be tied in bundles.
- Individual bundles or items should not exceed 1.5 m (5 ft) in any dimension.
- Mass should be not greater than 30 kg (65 lb) per item or bundle.
- Garden refuse, etc. should be in containers as required for domestic garbage. (plastic or vinyl garbage bags, securely tied, of a capacity of not less than 50 litres nor more than 90 litres).
Citizens are asked NOT to place yard waste at the curbside until directed. Advertisements are placed in the newspaper as well as through public service announcements on local radio stations.
The spring yard clean-up is not intended to provide for pickup of major items such as furniture, stoves, refrigerators, bed springs and mattresses, or residue from major tree removal or major clearing operations.
