The City of Fredericton obtains its drinking water from a groundwater supply located on the Southside of the City. Drinking water wells are located in the Wilmot Park and Queen Square neighbourhoods. The land surrounding these wells, called a wellfield, requires protection from chemical and petroleum storage, and various activities that could contaminate our water supply.
To reduce the risk of contaminating the water supply, certain activities and potential contaminants will be regulated within the Wellfield Protected Area. This area is divided into three zones: Zone A, Zone B, and Zone C (click here to view the map). Information for Commercial, Industrial, Institutional and Multi-Unit Residential Properties can be found here.
A variety of different properties are located within the City of Fredericton's wellfield and may be directly affected by a new regulation. As one of a variety of means of protecting the drinking water supply, Fredericton City Council has passed a resolution requesting that the New Brunswick Minister of the Environment and Local Government designate the groundwater supply under the Wellfield Protected Area Designation Order - Clean Water Act (Order) (click here to view the Guide).
The Order allows the City of Fredericton to work with the Province to protect the drinking water supply. The Provincial Wellfield Protected Area Designation Order ensures maximum protection to Fredericton's water supply while minimizing the impact to property owners, residents, and businesses.
If the property is not in compliance with the Order at the time of designation, the property owner must apply for an Exemption (see the Exemption Application Form). An exemption will allow residents time to make changes on their property in order to meet the requirements of the Order. The amount of time granted will depend on which type of exemption is applied for.
Exemption Application Forms are to be forwarded to the Wellfield Protection Officer.
