City Advises Public of Temporary Change to Wastewater Treatment

The City of Fredericton Water & Sewer Utility advises the public that due to upgrades and construction activities at the Barker Street Wastewater Treatment Facility, the City’s secondary wastewater treatment with disinfection has been changed to be chemically-assisted primary treatment without disinfection.

This affects wastewater being discharged from the wastewater treatment facility outfall, located where the Saint John River and the Nashwaak River intersect.  Swimming is not recommended in the water in this area.

Signage will be installed.  The work is expected to be completed by October 20, 2017.

The work is necessary to complete upgrades at the Barker Street Treatment Facility, including the construction of an additional secondary clarifier.  Federal and Provincial Regulators are aware of this change.
