City Awards $95,000 in Arts Culture and Heritage Grants

The City of Fredericton’s Arts, Culture and Heritage Grants Program has awarded $95,000 in grants to 34 non-profit groups in Fredericton.

Projects awarded funding include those ranging from theatre, music (folk, blues, classical), festivals, cultural celebrations, dance, children’s creative literacy, artist residencies, fine craft, a heritage fair, and film screenings.

“We’re pleased to be able to help facilitate programming that enhances the quality of life in our community,” said Fredericton Mayor Mike O’Brien.  “Continuing to provide funding support to these non-profit arts, culture, and heritage organizations remains a top priority of City Council.”

New projects funded this year include a special screening of the silent film ‘The Battle of Somme” presented by the Fredericton Symphony Orchestra, who plan to simultaneously perform the soundtrack composed for the silent film. ‘The Battle of Somme’ was filmed during the four-month battle and remains one of the most successful films ever made.

The Fredericton Arts Alliance has also been awarded funding to repurpose the container box used last year for the City’s Imagination Station as an artist in residence hub. The first artist in residence will paint the container and transform it as the new ‘Art in the Box’.

New start-up ‘Flourish Festival Inc.’ received a grant for the first time and held its third edition April 20-23, 2017.  The progressive, arts-oriented, inclusive festival was held in 6 different alternative venues in downtown Fredericton with almost every event reaching maximum capacity.

The Arts, Culture and Heritage Funding Program of the City of Fredericton is designed to encourage new projects or activities in the creative arts, culture and heritage sectors through the provision of small grants to eligible organizations for assistance of up to $5,000 for multi-day festivals, major events or series, and up to $2,000 for other projects.  Grants are awarded through a jury process based on set criteria.

This year’s grant pool was expanded by an extra $10,000 by City Council as part of its Canada 150 and Beyond Fund.  For more information visit www.fredericton.ca/grants or contact culture@fredericton.ca.
