Nominate someone for an Unsung Hero Community Award!

City now accepting Unsung Hero Community Awards nominations

The City of Fredericton Unsung Hero Community Awards are meant to acknowledge those individuals who go above and beyond to help build and shape their community. This includes helping bolster the work of social groups and organizations that offer recreational, cultural, or charitable services to the community.  

If you know of someone who is deserving of such an award, please nominate him, her, or them.  The application deadline is Monday, April 17, 2017.  

Here are some examples of the activities for which you can nominate a person or a group:

  • Awareness – Involvement in a project, initiative, service, or media that promotes awareness of a particular issue.
  • International Students – Building connections between international students and the Fredericton community to promote student retention and workforce development.
  • Newcomers – Assisting newcomers with the immigration process, hosting prospective residents, or helping facilitate community involvement so that they may become independent and fully participating members of society.
  • Recreation and Sport – Encouraging the involvement of persons of all ages and origins in local recreation and sport.
  • Seniors and Persons with Disabilities – Providing appropriate care and support for seniors or persons with disabilities while helping to combat isolation.
  • The Arts – Creating or organizing an exhibition, a film, or streetscape art that promotes cultural harmony and understanding.
  • Tutoring – Developing or delivering programs/activities that build skills or knowledge of persons in need to participate fully in all aspects of our community.
  • Women – Supporting the participation of women in leadership roles within our society.
  • Youth – Encouraging youth engagement and leadership within our society.
  • Other – Any other category that you think is pertinent to this award.
  • NOTE:  Contributions made by residents to enhance Fredericton’s cultural diversity which were previously recognized by the City’s Intercultural Award will now be included within the Unsung Hero Community Awards under the categories of Newcomers or International Students. 

This is the 24th year of these Awards and they will be presented on Friday, May 12, 2017 on behalf of Mayor and Council.  All winners and their guests will be invited to attend a reception at City Hall at noon that day to formally accept their awards.
