City provides COVID-19 program update | May 11, 2020

What services can resume; which are being cancelled

In response to the Province’s COVID-19 Recovery Plan, and the move to the orange recovery phase, City staff have provided an update to City Council about what City programs can continue during the pandemic and which ones must be cancelled for this year.

The decisions follow an analysis of the Province’s Plan and related documents, as well as the City’s own two-step review process. That process is designed to ensure staff and public safety, as well as look at the sustainability of the service, changes to the delivery process, and financial implications. The program update follows.

  • Transit. Recognizing that retail outlets are now allowed to open, effective May 19, Fredericton Transit will move to hourly service, modified from its regular Saturday schedule. Fare collection will also begin that day. Additional details related to the May 19 start will be released later in the week.
  • Standing Committees. City Council’s Standing Committees will resume their work by holding virtual meetings in May and June.
    • Transportation – May 19

    • Service Centre.  The City Hall Service Centre remains closed, but residents can continue to carry out transactions over the phone, online or by appointment if necessary.
  • Trail Visitor Centre.  The operation of the trail visitor centre, at the north end of the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge on Station Street, is cancelled due to restrictions on large gatherings and maintaining physical distancing.

  • Summer Band Concerts. The City’s Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday outdoor summer concert series is cancelled due to restrictions on large gatherings and maintaining physical distancing.
  • Outdoor Films Series. The City’s Saturday and Sunday “Under the Stars” outdoor film series is cancelled due to restrictions on large gatherings and maintaining physical distancing.

The review of many other City programs and services continues. Further announcements can be expected in the coming days and weeks. The City thanks the public for their patience as staff work through the review process needed to keep staff and the public safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
