City residents invited to welcome HMCS Fredericton “Bike for Wishes” Tour

The City of Fredericton invites residents to come out and welcome crewmembers from our namesake ship, the HMCS Fredericton, as they arrive in Fredericton as part of the 9th Annual “Bike for Wishes” fundraising tour in support of the Children’s Wish Foundation, presented by JD Irving Ltd.

The tour, which will see two teams of crewmembers from HMCS Fredericton, supported by some crewmembers from HMCS Brunswicker, cycle around northern and southern New Brunswick from August 6-11, 2017.  They will arrive in Fredericton on the evening of August 10.  While in Fredericton, the crew will participate in two events.

The first is called Ships ‘n Giggles, a ladies night out at the Crowne Plaza Fredericton-Lord Beaverbrook on August 10 starting at 7:30 pm.  Join hypnotist Jason Cyrus and crewmembers from the HMCS Fredericton for a fun evening. Tickets are $40 each and can be purchased online at or at the front desk of the hotel. For more information, call 1-800-267-9474.  Doors open at 6:30 pm; there will be a sailor-themed photo booth.

The next day, August 11, at 10:30 am, City officials will welcome the crew as they finish the final leg of their tour by cycling into Officers’ Square in Downtown Fredericton.  The public is invited to be on hand for the crew’s arrival.  Following a brief welcome ceremony and cheque presentation, a wish will be granted to a child.  To conclude the morning, an official from the ship will participate in the 11 am Inspection of the Guard Ceremony.

One of this year’s wish recipients is Cooper or “Super Cooper” as he has been nicknamed.  He is going to be seven years old on August 5 and was diagnosed with a brain tumour in September of 2016.  He underwent an 18 hour brain surgery to remove the tumour and is closely monitored by his health care team at the IWK.  It’s been a very long and difficult journey for Cooper, but he remains upbeat and very positive.  The staff at the hospital bestowed the title of “Super Cooper” on him because of his warm and lovable personality.

His mom Stacey told us “We think this wish would help bring our family back together and restore some sense of normalcy after everything Cooper has been through.  Cooper was so excited that his wish was granted, that we can’t even imagine how magical a Disney Cruise will be for him and us.  It will put the sparkle back in his eye!”

All proceeds from the tour will go towards supporting the wishes of children diagnosed with with high risk, life threatening illnesses, and severe neurological or genetic conditions in New Brunswick.  Last year, the Bike for Wishes tour raised over $60,000 in support of the Children’s Wish Foundation, enough money to make the wishes of six children come true.

“We are always pleased to welcome crewmembers from the HMCS Fredericton to our city,” said Coun. Stephen Chase, the City of Fredericton’s liaison with the ship.  “I encourage everyone to get out, support their fundraising efforts, and cheer their arrival into Downtown Fredericton.”
