City Seeks Submissions for 2018–2020 Cultural Laureate

The City of Fredericton is now accepting submissions for the position of Cultural Laureate for 2018-2020.

The successful applicant, a resident of the city, will have achieved excellence among their peers and have a body of work that demonstrates a connection to the city and relevance to the citizens of Fredericton. This position begins in January 2018. Applications are due by October 27, 2017.

The City of Fredericton’s Cultural Laureate will reach out to a broad audience through public appearances, outreach and community engagement activities; work to raise the profile of – and be an advocate for – the arts; reflect our citizens’ broad interests and aspirations through their artwork; and, as a representative of the city, the Laureate will highlight and celebrate our history and relevant features of our present-day social, cultural, economic, and natural environment.

The focus of Fredericton’s first Cultural Laureate (Ian LeTourneau, 2016 – 2018) was the literary arts. During his term, Letourneau created five works of poetry that celebrate Fredericton, engaged the community through public readings at events and City Council meetings, led workshops for adults and children in partnership with the Fredericton Public Library, and is working to launch the first ‘Word Feast: Fredericton’s Literary Festival’ to take place in September.

“Ian LeTourneau has been a tremendous asset to our community as Cultural Laureate and has helped to incorporate art into our everyday lives,” said Mayor Mike O’Brien. “His unique and insightful poetry has delighted readers of all ages, and his Literary Festival endeavour will surely enhance our City’s already strong literary heritage as ‘The Poet’s Corner of Canada’.”

Candidates for Fredericton’s next Cultural Laureate will be considered from all art disciplines. Applicants are invited to propose how they would effectively engage the residents of Fredericton through the arts. The Cultural Laureate position was a recommendation of the City of Fredericton Cultural Plan, adopted in 2014.
