City to Host ‘Freddy Beach Welcome Barbecue’ September 5 to Welcome Post-Secondary Students

The City of Fredericton will roll out the red carpet on Thursday, September 5, 2019 to herald the annual return of students to the University of New Brunswick, St. Thomas University, the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, the New Brunswick Community College, the Maritime College of Forest Technology, the Moncton Flight College, and the various private post-secondary institutions in the city.

Hosted by the City of Fredericton in partnership with Downtown Fredericton Inc., and the University of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University, the 21st annual Freddy Beach Welcome Barbecue will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Officers’ Square. A large tent will be set up in the square in the event of inclement weather.

“Students are an important part of our community,” said Fredericton Mayor Mike O’Brien. “We welcome them back to Fredericton.”

Entertainment at the square will include one of Fredericton’s popular bands, Wicked Vices. There will also be a tattoo artist and of course, free BBQ food that will be served by volunteers from the Knights of Columbus. In order to protect the environment, please bring a water bottle to fill up with water as individual bottled water will not be handed out at this event.

Booths will be set up through the Square by Fredericton Transit, the Fredericton Sexual Assault Centre, Ignite Fredericton, the Fredericton Trails Coalition, Active Fredericton, the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival, UNBSU’s Shinerama, Connect Fredericton, the First Fredericton Rovers, and the Playhouse, among other organizations, to provide information to students about their products and services.

The students will be greeted at Officers’ Square by ceremonial guards lined along a red carpet and greeted by Mayor O’Brien, members of City Council, and other public and academic officials.

Last year, about 2,000 students and residents attended the party. The event has become an important part of Orientation Week activities, which take place annually on the UNB and STU campuses.

The last Garrison Night Market of the year will also be taking place at the same time as the Welcome BBQ.

If you need accessible transport to get to the event, please call Loyal Taxi at 455-6789 as they will be providing paratransit services after regular hours.
