Fred-eHack announced for June 9: Innovative new applications being sought

Continuing on its smart city journey, the City of Fredericton is inviting members of the public to participate in a twelve-hour hackathon on Sunday, June 9, 2019 called Fred-eHack, to solicit ideas on potential use cases or minimum viable products (MVP) using the municipally-owned Internet of Things (IoT) sensor network.

This new event will take place at Planet Hatch from 8:00am - 8:00pm with a preceding information session and webinar taking place on Thursday, June 6 from 4:30 - 5:30pm.  Interested persons can register at Eventbrite by June 5, 2019.

The City of Fredericton has partnered with eleven-x to deploy IoT sensors on its LoRaWAN™ based low power wide area network ((LPWAN).  “The sensors enable real-time information and data collection from things previously impossible to monitor. For example, the occupancy and utilization of wheelchair accessible parking spaces throughout the city and the level of the Saint John River to help respond to flood conditions” said Ryan Hickey, COO of eleven-x.

“As part of our innovation agenda, we are opening up our network to anyone looking to innovate and develop new applications, which could work into a potential business opportunity” remarked Coun. Bruce Grandy, Chair of the City’s Development Committee.  “Fred-eHack will become an annual City of Fredericton offering, as we develop better mediums to co-create and work with the startup community.”

Some current and planned IoT network usage applications include: real-time flood monitoring & water level data; parking spot occupancy status using real-time connected sensors; quality of life applications for air and noise pollution; water consumption sensors at arenas; field moisture sensors to monitor the condition of sporting fields; and occupancy counters to measure laps.

This one-day boutique style hackathon is also presented in partnership with Ignite Fredericton, Planet Hatch and Startup Fredericton. Larry Shaw, CEO of Ignite Fredericton, remarked “Representing the entrepreneurial community, we’re pleased to partner with Fredericton on this event to enable local entrepreneurs to take advantage of opportunities that come with the making of a smart community.”

  • During the event, the City of Fredericton will have the following tools and resources available:
  • Fredericton Open Data Portal & API (application program interface) access
  • Technology & connectivity expertise from eleven-x and City of Fredericton
  • Limited ST Microelectronics Development Kits for Proof of Concept using sensor technology
  • One month free access (value $55) to qwiklabs.com learning platform compliments of GDG (Google Developer Group ) Cloud Fredericton. Learn about IoT and how to develop applications in the cloud environment to communicate with IoT devices.

The winning team could collect $5,000 of in-kind services from eleven-x to further their idea plus there will be some cash prizes ($1,000 and two $500 prizes). It could also result in municipal government application - part of the City of Fredericton’s ‘early adopter program’ (in development) to pilot and test potential business ideas and obtain critical feedback from municipal staff and participating customers.
