York Arena Reopening Delayed

The reopening of the York Arena has been delayed until October 17, 2016 due to an ammonia leak at the facility.

Work crews working near the arena’s ice plant this morning ruptured a pipe carrying ammonia.  The facility was evacuated.  Police, Fire and Ambulance responded.  WorkSafe NB was contacted.  Two people were taken to hospital for treatment, for non-life threatening injuries, and have since been released.

Work crews at the arena have been sent home while WorkSafe NB investigates the incident.  Due to shut down of the work site, final work to be carried out today and over the weekend for Tuesday’s opening will now have to be completed next week.

City staff will be contacting user groups scheduled to use the facility about the change in dates.  The public skating schedule for the arena was not set to begin until October 17 anyway.
