August 10

To the residents of Fredericton:

One year ago today, the unthinkable happened. We lost Donnie Robichaud and Bobbi-Lee Wright, and two of our own police officers – Cst. Robb Costello and Cst. Sara Burns – in a terrible act of violence.

We were shaken, but we will not let this break us. The community has rallied together like we have never seen before. Your collective arms wrapped around us as we grieved the loss of our friends and colleagues, and worked to adapt to our new normal.

Without the incredible showing of compassion, support and kindness that you have shown us since August 10, 2018, we would not have been able to heal as we have.

The Fredericton Police Force is filled with men and women who come to work each day to serve and protect and keep this community – our community – safe. We have struggled, but we continue to gain strength and your support has helped us get there.

We know that there are still challenges ahead, and there will undoubtedly be more hard times, but through those, we will persevere, knowing that we work in a community of people who care.

Today we are spending time with our police family, in reflection, fellowship and healing to remember our friends and celebrate their lives. We will also be recognizing those officers working today to keep our city safe. We know that the citizens of Fredericton will be remembering in their own way, and we are appreciative of those acts big and small.

As a department we are moving forward and hopeful for the future. We will continue to serve this community we love to the best of our ability, and with the professionalism, compassion and integrity that you deserve.

On behalf of all of us, thank you.

From the men and women of the Fredericton Police Force
