Man arrested after overnight standoff

A 46-year old male has been taken into custody following an overnight standoff with police at a Southside residence.

At approximately 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2020, members of the Fredericton Police Patrol Division attended a private residence on Fredericton’s Southside in regards to an ongoing investigation of uttering threats and mischief. During attempts to speak with the male, his mental health and public safety became a significant concern and Police Force Crisis Negotiators were called in efforts to de-escalate the situation

While speaking with the officers, the male barricaded himself in an adjacent room, and ongoing attempts to gain the subject’s cooperation with police were met with negative results. As a result of the subject breaking off communication with police negotiators and in order to ensure public safety, members of the Fredericton Police Emergency Response Team (ERT) effected entry through the barricade and safely took the male into custody.

The Fredericton Fire Department and Ambulance New Brunswick (ANB) were also on scene to provide any necessary assistance.

During the course of ERT making entry, CS (tear) gas was deployed to assist with the subject’s surrender and lower the risk of injury to all parties involved.

The male was seen by ANB at the scene, and subsequently transported by police to the hospital for assessment. Several animals that were located in the home were removed by police to a safe location to negate any unnecessary exposure to the teargas.

Charges related to the original file remain under investigation.
