October 22, 2007 - City Council today awarded a $1.9-million contract to Monteith Underground Service Ltd. to build the City's new firefighter training complex on Two Nations Crossing.
"This new facility will give our firefighters the best possible tool for live fire training," said Councillor Tony Whalen, chair of the City's Public Safety & Environment Committee. "There's no doubt that this type of facility will help future generations of firefighters save lives and you can't put a price on that."
Funding for the project will come from the Two Nations Crossing Fire Station Capital Project Budget.
The company is expected to begin immediately on the project, which includes preparation of the site and construction of the training complex and assembly of a four-storey training tower. The tower will be shipped October 30 in pre-manufactured components from Wisconsin, USA and assembled on site.
Deadline for completion of the contract is June 15, 2008.
The training facility contract is the first phase of the City's construction of two new fire stations and state of the art training facility.
One station will be built next to the fire training facility on Two Nations Crossing and the other will be built in the Silverwood area, once the City successfully completes negotiations for a suitable location. It is expected tenders for construction of the two stations will be issued early in the new year and construction will start in the Spring.
