The Fredericton Fire & Publc Safey Centre of Excellence is located adjacent to the Northside Fire Station, which officially opened in September 2009. The complex was designed to meet a variety of public safety training requirements with both classroom courses and hands-on training in life-like simulations.
Training Tower
The centre of the complex is the four-storey training tower.
The four-storey tower is designed to simulate all the real-world conditions firefighters and emergency response teams will face in their daily duties.
The tower has four working deck levels, ideal for rappelling and laddering. There will also be two burn rooms, one on the first floor and the other on the second floor. The flames will be fuelled by natural gas and non-toxic synthetic smoke will be used to protect the environment.
TRAINING PADS
There are several pads surrounding the tower for training in vehicle extraction, fire extinguisher training, confined space training and a drafting pit for pump testing and training on drafting water.
The Fredericton Fire Department will use about 50 per cent of available training time at the facility to train its own crews.
The remainder of the time will be offered to other Maritime fire departments and Emergency Response Teams to offset some of the operating costs.
MULTIMEDIA CLASSROOMS
The adjacent Northside Fire Station, which offcially opened in Sweptember 2009, provides a large multimedia classroom capabale of seating up to 40 people.
The lessons learned in the classroom are quickly applied to training in very life-like simulations in and around the nearby training tower.
The City is currently booking training sessions and has hired a Training Facility Coordinator to market and manage the complex.
