The Fredericton Police Force has confirmed that an assault charge was laid in Provincial Court in Fredericton on Wednesday afternoon (January 13th) against Fredericton Police Constable Stephen Stafford. The charge stems from an alleged incident that occurred in the downtown bar area during the early morning hours of July 18th, 2009. At the time of the alleged incident, Constable Stafford was working his regular shift as a patrol officer. Following a public complaint, Cst. Stafford was initially suspended from his duties as a Police Officer effective July 23rd, 2009 and the Fredericton Police Chief had requested the R.C.M.P. conduct a criminal investigation into the complaint that had been filed with the Force, July 21st, 2009. Cst. Stafford was reinstated on September 14th, 2009, and assigned to office duties.
No appearances were made at the time the charge was laid and it is anticipated that a plea may be entered at a later date. The Fredericton Police Force will not be providing any further comment regarding the charge against Cst. Stafford, as the matter is now before the courts. Cst. Ralph Currie confirms that Cst. Stafford remains on the job and continues his assignment of ‘office duty’. Any inquiries pertaining to specifics of the investigation may be forwarded to Constable Chantal E. Farrah, Acting Media Relations Officer for R.C.M.P. ‘J’ Division. Cst. Farrah’s contact telephone number is (506)470-9505.
