What is a Fire Investigation?
A fire investigation is a process or procedure where the origin and cause of a fire are determined.
Under Section 7 (1) of the New Brunswick Fire Prevention Act, fires occurring within the territorial jusridiction of the City of Fredericton Fire Department are investigated to determine their origin, cause and circumstances surrounding the fire or explosion.
The primary goal of any fire investigation is not only to determine the origin and cause, but to assist in directing future building and fire code development. These investigations also help in the determination of recalls.
Fires of a suspicious or incendiary nature require that the police become involved. The fire investigator then either works with, or hands the "origin and cause file" investigation over to the appropriate police agency. Our Fire Investigation Division works with both the Fredericton Police Force and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as our investigation jurisdiction extends beyond the city limits in some areas.
The Fredericton Fire Department is one of two fire departments in the Maritimes that utilize the service of a fire investigation canine in the investigation process when necessary. Snickers, the Department's canine has worked fire scenes all over the Province and some in Nova Scotia.
As the field of fire suppression changes, so does
that of the fire investigation, our investigators are
required to attend courses and training programs to keep up to date with the "continued education" requirements of the investigators certification.
