The Suppression / Operations Division of the department is responsible for maintaining equipment, training staff and other related duties. The largest portion of the Department includes the stations and the apparatus necessary to meet the most commonly known responsibility of the Fire Department, fire suppression.
The Fire Department also provides other services under the umbrella of the Department's "Mission Statement": 
Jointly, with the Oromocto Fire Department, and under contract with the Province of New Brunswick, the Fredericton Fire Department provides one of the provinces "Regional HazMat Heavy Teams". This regional team covers an area of roughly two thirds of the Province.
Medical emergency response is provided as a first responder service and to assist River Valley Health's Paramedics in providing timely response to medical emergencies. 
Some of the Department's apparatus are equipped with specialized extrication equipment, commonly referred to as "the Jaws" which are used in the extrication of persons who are trapped in vehicles after accidents.

Ice and water rescue services are provided to respond to water related emergencies and incidents. The Fire Department also participates in a joint marine unit with the Fredericton Police Force.

A large portion of the Department's time is spent in training. Crews are required to keep current with the changes and challenges of providing the quality of service the Department is known for.
