Bike Theft

In the City of Fredericton there are approximately 170
bicycles reported stolen every year.Of these, only 30
are recovered.Don't be a statistic! Follow these simple
tips and prevent your bike from being stolen!

LOCK IT UP!

What to use:

  • Buy the best locking devide you can afford.
  • Use a hardened steel U-type lock I
  • f you must use a cable or chain buy one at least 3/8" in diameter.
  • Use a padlock/key lock that has a shackle with a double locking system

Where to lock it up:

  • If you have a garage, keep your bike there.
  • Make sure your garage is properly secured.
  • Use bicycle racks or immovable objects to attach your bike to (bikes that are locked to themselves can easily be carried away)
  • Do not secure to a chain link fence or other object that is weaker than your lock.
  • Secure your bike in well-lit area! Thieves love the dark!
  • Avoid high crime and deserted areas.
  • Lock your bike near pedestrian traffic where it is observable from an office area, residence etc.
  • Do not attach your bike to a stair case railing. This is fire and safety violation.

How to lock it up:

To properly lock your bike on a bike rack:

  1. Place your front tire over the top rail, letting the body of the bicycle rest on top.
  2. Secure your front tire and frame to the rack.
  3. Lock your rear tire to the bike frame with another locking device

U-Locks:

  • Bikes with quick release wheels:
Release the front wheel and lock it to the rear wheel and the frame.

  • Bikes without quick release wheels:
secure the lock through both the front tire and the frame.

Cables and Chains:

  • Keep the lock as high off the ground as possible. This makes it more difficult for thieves to attack the lock.

  • Thread the cable/chain through the front tire, around the frame and post, and then through the rear tire.
  • Remove any accessories, such as tire pump, seat or bags that can be easily taken.

BE SMART!

  • Do not leave your bike unattended even if only for a minute.
  • Record the make, model, and serial number of your bike and keep it in a safe place.
  • Engrave your drivers license number, or another identifying number on ALL parts of your bike: handlebars, seat, both wheels, frame.
  • Take pictures of your bike
  • Keep a sales receipt or proof of purchase.
  • Report suspicious persons observed near bicycle racks.

  • Your information will be retained in our computer system. If your bike is found, it will be returned to you!

REPORT IT!

  • Report your stolen bike to the police as soon as possible.
  • This will let police know where there is a problem.
  • It will give them accurate information about the problem they can use to catch the thieves (for example: allow them to change their patrols.)
  • The bike will be returned to you if it is found.
