"Crime Prevention Through Social Development"

Police - School Safety Program

This program is researched, designed and delivered to 15 Primary and 4 Middle schools, and provides opportunity for student interaction with the police. Each school has a Police-School Safety Program booklet containing a selection of topics. Once the teacher makes the selection for his/her class, the school is booked for a week or two, depending on the school size. Topics range from Internet Safety, Drug Awareness, Sharps, to Bullies, Literacy and Block Parent programs, just to name a few. Officers promote participation in these interactive presentations by utilizing scenarios, props, music, etc.. As students, teachers and parents arrive prior to morning classes, they are greeted by the police officer. We are on the playground with the students at recess and over the noon hour to interact, watch for bullies, and provide an opportunity for dialogue.

The CR Section also delivers safety programs to children in day care, after school programs and youth groups. We are also more than happy to meet with parent groups for information sessions on Bullying and Internet Awareness.

We believe it is never too early to speak to children about safety!

Seniors programs

We recognize and respect the vast knowledge and experience seniors in our community have to offer. Consequently, we recruit their services from time to time to assist with various projects. We offer the S.T.E.P Program (Seniors Taking Extra Precautions), presentations on Elder Abuse, and we perform special home security checks for those living independently.
It is important to stay active and social.

Business and Community Programs

We continue to offer various crime prevention seminars, including presentations on Fraud, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, Shoplifting, and many more. Our Robbery Prevention Program is an interactive presentation specifically designed for each business. We examine store policy, legal issues, product placement, theft prevention, apprehension, weapons (including needles) and much more.

Our Community Programs include safety talks regarding Impaired Driving Awareness (assisted by the Fatal Vision Goggles), Personal Safety, Snowmobile Safety, Water/Boat Safety, Neighborhood Watch and Block Parent programs, to name a few. We also deliver a Literacy Program to children/youth groups using our story Sacks that contain books and props. This approach allows children to listen to the story as well as participate. It is a project we all have fun with!

Our mascot, Sgt. Paddy Patroll, and our remote control police car Radar, regularly participate in community events including hockey games, Canada Day activities, National Police Week, Crime Prevention Week, Aboriginal Days and school visits.
