Information on Drugs

he Community Crime Section was established several years ago to address crime and quality of life issues as they relate to policing. Attached to the Criminal Investigation Division the CCS mandate includes drug enforcement, less serious criminal investigations, missing persons and to provide investigative support for other Sections/Divisions of the Force.

As concerned parents you ask yourselves - Will my child use drugs? In today's drug-oriented society, it is PREDICTABLE that about 90% of all children will at least experiment with drugs. Your child could very well be one of them.

Easier access to drugs, combined with social pressures, make drug use more prevalent in today's world. Children experiment with drugs for a number of reasons:

  • Peer pressure - everyone's doing it
  • Curiosity
  • To draw attention to themselves (underlying problems)
  • As an escape
  • They find it pleasurable  

SIGNS OF DRUG ABUSE

  • Drastic change of attitude (lazy - spaced out)
  • Change of diet
  • Change of friends
  • Change of hours (coming and going)
  • Attention span and memory functions reduced
  • Loss of motivation, memory
  • Can't account for the way they spend their money (increased need for money)
  • Physical evidence (drug paraphernalia)
  • Plastic bags
  • Silver foil
  • Smoking devices (pipes, roach clips)
  • Scales (large or pocket size)
  • Actually find plants or unknown substance
  • Mood changes
  • Paranoia
  • Cigarette papers
  • Bottle caps or small vials (weed oil)
  • Pupil size: Narcotic (small); speed (large)
  • Smell: masking with cologne or perfume
  • Burnt spoons or knives
