Fredericton (February 14, 2008) - The development of a new recreation master plan for the City of Fredericton is under way and should be ready to present to City Council for approval by the end of September, the City's Community Services Committee was told today.
"I'm very pleased to see that a steering committee is now in place and that this important process has begun," said Councillor Bruce Grandy, Committee Chair. "I'm looking forward to the public meetings where stakeholder groups and individuals who care about the future of recreation services in our City will have an opportunity to voice their opinions."
In January, City Council awarded a $77,190 tender to dmA Planning and Management Services Inc., in partnership with the Terrain Group and BDA Ltd., to prepare the new Recreation Master Plan, which will address current as well as future recreation infrastructure and programming needs in the City.
Steering Committee Members include: Wayne Tallon, Director, Community Services Department; Frank Flanagan, Director, Development Services; Tony Hay, Assistant Director, Community Services Department; Bob Cormier, Asset Manager, Asset Management Division; Brian Cochrane, Manager, Parks & Trees Division; Connie Nichol, Facilities Coordinator, Recreation Division; Meredith Gilbert, Planner, Planning & Development Division; Robert Glenwright, Landscape Horticulturalist, Parks & Trees Division and Michelle Horncastle, Manager, Recreation Division.
The consultants have toured the City's major indoor facilities and are in the process of collecting information. Public meetings and focus group meetings will be held during March and April along with stakeholder group surveys and online resident surveys during the consultation phase
The committee will continue to work with the consultants throughout the spring and summer months and will prepare recommendations and financial implications and present their report to Council for consideration next fall.
"Our recreational programs and facilities are an important part of the balanced lifestyle that makes our City special," said Councillor Grandy. "I'm looking forward to following the work on this important project and to receiving the final report,"
