Freddy’s Commuter Challenge is an online program designed to encourage ‘alternative commuting’ . The goal of the program is for all participants together to achieve 100,000 alternative commutes over the challenge period. To symbolize progress an icon of Freddy (Fredericton’s famous fountains ‘nude dude’) will progress along a 100,000 commute path with each step being triggered by the entry of one alternative commute.

Freddy’s Commuter Challenge is supported by ‘in motion’

Participants sign on and  indicate online each daily round trip  alternative commute.

So sign up and get your family members and co-worker to sign-up too!! Let’s get ‘in motion’ and help the environment, reduce traffic congestion and help poor Freddy complete his journey!

Who can participate- people who live and / or work in Fredericton during the summer of 2010.

Definitions

Commute - your main trip of the day from home - to work or school - and back home again

Alternative commuting-  is doing your commute in a way that is an alternative (and often the more sustainable choice)  to the usual one person per vehicle method. Possible means of alternate commuting are: walking, biking, carpooling, taking the bus or any combination of these.

Why this challenge is timely: This challenge is timely for the summer of 2010 because traffic congestion – particularly in the downtown and around the Westmorland Street Bridge will be much heavier than usual due to the closure of the Princess Margaret Bridge. Many residents of downtown N’sis and Devon may actually find it quicker to walk or bike to get across the river than to use their cars. Many others who live further from the downtown core may find parking at a northside location and then taking a bus or biking/walk to be a quicker/ more efficient option.
