in motion is an evidence-based health promotion strategy which uses physical activity and healthy eating as a means to improving the health of New Brunswick communities. in motion in the Greater Fredericton Regions is supported by the Greater Fredericton Region’s Network for Healthy Living and the Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Coalition of New Brunswick (HEPAC). The vision of the Greater Fredericton Region in motion initiative is: Together, the Greater Fredericton Region is committed to building communities that support healthy and physically active lifestyles.

Freddy’s Commuter Challenge (Supported by 'In Motion')

Get out your bikes, warm up your sneakers!

Once again this summer the Princess Margaret Bridge will be closed for repairs. Closure dates are expected to be May 8 – September 5, 2011. In order to ease traffic congestion the City of Fredericton and in motion are once again encouraging the public to walk, bike, carpool, take the bus or a combination of these to make their daily commute.

  • Caught Commuting- during the bridge closure in motion crews will be monitoring pedestrian, bicycle, bus and car traffic. On eight random dates these crews will be surprising members of the public ‘caught’ walking, biking, carpooling or using the bus and providing them with an in motion reward. Be proactive in dealing with traffic congestion while helping yourself and the environment by takingthe Freddy Commuter Challenge and you may be spotted by the in motion crew!
  • Wednesday Walk With Mayor Woodside – Our local in motion ambassador, Fredericton Mayor Brad Woodside will lead an in motion walk-to-work each Wednesday morning from May 11 - June 29 beginning at 7:30am from the Trail Visitor Centre on Station Road. Walk, drive, bike or take the bus to Station Road and join Mayor Woodside for coffee, apple, conversation and an enjoyable walk across Fredericton’s famous Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge before starting your work day.

Visit the Cities of New Brunswick Challenge is an online program that encourages and promotes physical activity. In this challenge, participants join teams of up to 5 people and do a virtual walk around the province using a pedometer or conversion chart to count their steps and track their progress from one city to the next.

Summer 2011 – Mayor’s Activity Awards

An exciting awards program which encourages healthy eating and physical activity for youth aged 6 – 12

This popular activity awards program will keep youth active and eating well all summer. Youth receive points for each task completed and upon reaching minimum point levels earn bronze, silver or gold medals! Sample requirements include:

    • Have a pop free day
    • Go for a ½ hour walk
    • Do a family activity outdoors for 20 minutes
This program will be held from June 13th to August 12th. The program is offered free-of-charge to all interested youth. To learn more email inmotion@fredericton.ca or contact the City of Fredericton Recreation Division at 460-2230.

Mom’s on the Move

Moms On The Move is a free, one-hour walking program that is held once per week during the summer months.  All 5km walks begin at the Trail Visitors Center on Station Road. These walks are intended as exercise for the adults so please bring your stroller, snuggly, or other mode of baby transportation for the little ones. 

Dads and other caregivers are always welcome.  The walking schedule for the 2011 summer season will be available in May, please call 460-2230, e-mail inmotion@fredericton.ca or visit us online at www.inmotionfredericton.ca  for more information.


 

Nordic Walking

The latest fitness trend ‘Nordic Walking’ is coming to Fredericton. A Nordic Walking instructional seminar will be held this spring to introduce you to this exciting full body walking workout. Following the seminar a Nordic walking club will be organized. Interested persons are welcome to join at anytime through-out the season. Loaner walking poles will be available during our walks for those who wish to give the sport a try. For more information about the sport/club contact inmotion@fredericton.ca

Free Tai Chi - Carleton Park

During these free classes learn the basics of proper body alignment for better posture, balance, coordination and flexibility with Wu Style Tai Chi. Learn how to increase your functional lung capacity by increasing your body awareness and letting go of restricting tension throughout your body. Be a more relaxed, focused, confident you.

When: 9:00am -10:00am on Saturday mornings from June 4th – July 23rd

Where: Carleton Park (rain or shine).

This is a free program open to all interested individuals aged 14 and over

No experience necessary, beginners are welcome. Register at the first class you attend!
