General Information
Odell Park is a 175 ha. and close to the downtown core. There are 16 km of multi use trails as well as 2.8 km of winding primitive trails that are more difficult to negotiate. The park contains open recreational area, woodland trails, ball fields and a playground. There is a lodge near the main entrance of the park at Rookwood Ave. and Waggoners Lane
Parking
Parking is available at the main entrance off the end of Rookwood Ave. at Waggoners Lane, Thompson Field on Smythe St. near Parkside Drive and at Prospect Park on Prospect St. Parking for the Fredericton Botanic Garden is at Prospect St. ball fields.
Accessibility
The trail near the main entrance has a smooth and level crusher dust surface which makes it easily accessible to all users. As you head up into the wooded areas, the trail becomes steeper in grade and is a more difficult climb. It is a fairly difficult 2 hour walk from the main entrance of the park to the upper end of the park and back.
Things to see and do
The park varies between beautiful landscaped gardens with Rhododendrons and other plants to an old growth virgin forest with towering old Hemlocks, hardwood and mixed wood stands There are open fields, ponds, and a playground. The park is often used as a location for wedding pictures. There is a picnic area with fireplaces and firewood available. There is a lodge available for rent for receptions, family reunions and other events.
The park is enjoyed by cross-country skiing enthusiasts with 16 km of groomed trails during the snowy months. An outdoor rink is available during the winter months. Call the Trail and Outdoor Rink Hotline at 460-2281 for conditions. The park is home to The Fredericton Botanic Garden, which is a developing garden 21 ha. in size. The Botanic Garden is located on the west side of the park.
Facilities (Bathrooms, Drinking fountains etc.)
Bathrooms and drinking fountains are available at the lodge near the Rookwood Ave. entrance to the park and there are portable toilets located at Thompson Field and Prospect Park during summer months.
Natural Environment
The park encompasses a variety of natural wooded and open areas. You may see the occasional deer, fox or small game. There are ducks and geese in the ponds as well as other bird species found in the park. There is a wide variety of plant life and the park is often used as an outdoor classroom for students of all ages.
