Summer Construction

The City of Fredericton invests annually into the municipality’s roads, curbs, sidewalks, traffic signals, and crosswalks, as well as water and sewer infrastructure.  The following interactive construction map provides general information about all the construction planned.  A summary of the major construction projects is also provided.

List of Major Projects (2017)

Carleton Street – Notice of Construction - Full street closure from Queen Street to the pedway.  Water, Sanitary sewer, and Storm sewer mains will be renewed in addition to installing underground electrical conduit.  The full right of way will be replaced with a paver stone surface.  Traffic impact on Queen Street will be minimal and no full street closures on Queen Street are expected.

Hawkins Street  -- Notice of Construction – Full closure of Hawkins Street from Wilcox to Edgewood Drive including Ebony Drive from Hawkins Street to approximately #28 Ebony Drive.  Water and Sanitary sewer mains will be renewed in addition to some storm mains.  This project will impact transit services and bus stops along Hawkins Street will be closed for the duration of the project. A temporary water system will be used to maintain the water service to homeowners during construction.  Frequently asked questions can be found here.

Primrose Avenue – Full closure of Primrose Avenue from Lombardi to Royal Road.  Water, Sanitary sewer, and Storm sewer mains will be renewed in addition to new curbing and asphalt road surface.  Some work will be in the intersection of Primrose and the Royal Road motorists can expect delays during this phase of the work.   A temporary water system will be used to maintain the water service to homeowners during construction.  Frequently asked questions can be found here.

Marysville Trunk Sewer - Project Completed - Full closure of the trail between Barkers Street and Canada Street.  The Sanitary sewer trunk main will be renewed.  The pedestrian detour will be along Gibson/Canada Street. 

Greenwood Drive  – Notice of Construction - This project will be completed in 2 phases. 

Phase 1 will include a full closure of Greenwood Drive from Birch crescent to the intersection of Greenwood Drive and Route 8.  Water and sanitary sewer mains will be renewed in addition to some storm sewer renewal.  New curbing, sidewalk, and asphalt road surface will also be installed.  This project will impact transit services and bus stops along Greenwood drive will be closed for the duration of the project.  A taxi service will be provided for monthly bus pass holders (see details here).  A temporary water system will be used to maintain the water service to homeowners during construction.  Frequently asked questions can be found here.

Phase 2 will include a partial closure of Greenwood drive from the intersection with Route 8 to the City limits near Civic #310.  This partial closure may reduce traffic to one way flow using flagpersons and/or traffic lights.  Expect delays.  The water and sanitary sewer mains will be renewed and some storm sewer will be renewed.  New curbing & sidewalk will be installed on the north side of the street in addition to a new asphalt road surface. Please note:  the intersection of Greenwood Drive and Route 8 will have a partial closure while water and sanitary sewer mains are renewed through the intersection.  This will impact traffic traveling along Route 8.

*Fredericton Transit will only be able to service as far as Carman Avenue.  The 14N Barkers Point will use Carman, Colwell, Sumac and to the end of the line.  Passengers who live on Greenwood Drive pass Carman Avenue will be provided taxi service by the City.  They will need to purchase a monthly pass and then call Transit (460-2210), will arrange for a taxi to get them downtown to Kings Place.

Highland Booster Station  – This project will include pump, electrical, mechanical, and controls upgrades to the booster station

Lincoln Lagoon Decommissioning - This project will result in the decommissioning of the Lincoln area lagoon.  There are no anticipated traffic delays expected as a result of this construction.

Lincoln Sanitary Forcemain and Aquarius Lift Station Upgrade - This project will include a full trail closure from Aquarius Street to Lincoln Road and from Lincoln Road to Wilsey Road. This work will include the installation of a new forcemain along the trail. Upgrades will also be done at the Aquarius Street lift station.  Some traffic delays will occur when construction is occurring on Aquarius Street.

Garden Creek Outfall – This project will require the full closure of the Trail system from Sansom Equipment (Civic #1475 Woodstock Road) to Stillwater Crescent.  The scope of this project includes the extension of the garden creek lagoon outfall into the Saint John River.  The work will be performed between June 1 and September 30.

Sunset Drive  –  Notice of Construction - This project will be done in two phases.

Phase 1 – a water main will be extended along the trail from Claremont Drive to Ruby Street.  This water main will strengthen the water distribution system by mitigating a system risk.  The trail will be paved upon completion of the installation.  Traffic will be impacted while a connection is made to the water main near Claremont Drive.

Phase 2 - Upon completion of Phase 1, Sunset drive will have a full street closure from the intersection with Main Street to Bailey Avenue.  This closure will permit the renewal of water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer mains on Sunset Drive.  New curbing, sidewalk, and asphalt road surface will be installed as well. This project phase will be limited to the period between the end of school and the start of school in an effort to minimize traffic disruption.  This project will impact transit services and bus stops along Sunset Drive will be impacted for the duration of the project.  Please see transit here for alternate bus stops.  A temporary water system will be used to maintain the water service to homeowners during construction.  Frequently asked questions can be found here.

*Fredericton Transit will only be able to services as far as Jewett St.  The 10N will detour Royal Rd, Ring Rd., Sunset Dr., Jewett St., Ferris St., and to the end of the line. Passengers below Jewett will need to catch the bus at Jewett. The 11S will do the same in reverse.

Chateau Heights – New water and sanitary sewer mains will be installed in the Chateau Heights Subdivision as well as on McLeod Hill Road.  McLeod Hill Road will be closed to through traffic from the current City limits (near Civic #989) to near Citation Avenue.  Traffic will be detoured using Royal Road.  Any residents with questions regarding water and sewer connections are asked to call Service Fredericton at 460-2020.

Diamond Reservoir – This project will include the installation of a bolted steel reservoir to service the Diamond pressure zone of the water distribution system.  In addition to the reservoir, water main and sanitary sewer main will be installed from the end of Emerald Street to the Reservoir site.

Montgomery Booster Station Upgrades – This project will include pump, electrical, mechanical, and controls upgrades to the booster station

Brookside Drive –  Project Completed - The final phase of the outer Brookside Drive Roadway and storm sewer upgrades will see the installation of new storm sewer, curbing and sidewalk extensions and roadway upgrades from Bramble Way to St. Mary's Street. \

*Fredericton Transit will only be able to services as far as Burns St. 

Preston DriveNotice of Construction - The scope of this project will include the renewal of water, and sanitary sewer mains in addition to some storm sewer.  New curbing and asphalt will be installed as part of the roadway upgrades.  A temporary water system will be used to maintain the water service to homeowners during construction.  Frequently asked questions can be found here.

Phyllis Creek-Woodstock Rd Culvert - Project Completed – This project will cause major traffic disruption as Woodstock Road will be fully closed from Marlborough Drive to Hanwell Road.  The Closure is necessary to install a culvert at Phyllis Creek.  During the Closure, truck traffic will be re-routed via Hanwell Road and Prospect Street West.

Wallace Avenue - Project Completed -  The scope of this project will include the renewal of water, and sanitary sewer mains in addition to some storm sewer.  New curbing and asphalt will be installed as part of the roadway upgrades. Wallace Avenue will be closed to through traffic for the duration of the project.   A temporary water system will be used to maintain the water service to homeowners during construction.  Frequently asked questions can be found here.

Waterloo Row Culvert - Project Completed -This project will cause major traffic disruption as Waterloo Row will be closed to through traffic from Dunns Crossing Road to the intersection of Waterloo Row and Forest Hill Road.  The Closure is necessary to install a culvert under the roadway and trail.  During the Closure, traffic will be re-routed via Wilsey Road, Kimble Drive, and Forest Hill Road.

Cedar Avenue - Project Completed - The scope of this project will include the renewal of water, and sanitary sewer mains in addition to some storm sewer.  New curbing and asphalt will be installed as part of the roadway upgrades.  A temporary water system will be used to maintain the water service to homeowners during construction.  Frequently asked questions can be found here.

Smythe Booster Station –  Project Completed - The scope of this project includes upgrades to the pumps, mechanical, electrical, controls, and site works.

Beechwood Crescent – This project will include the renewal of water and sanitary sewer mains in addition to storm sewer improvements and roadways upgrades.
