TrailsBikeways Master Plan Public Consultation June 26

Photo of TrailsFredericton (June 19, 2007) - The public will have a chance to help shape the Trails/Bikeways Master Plan for the City of Fredericton during a public consultation meeting June 26 at the Northside Sports & Leisure Complex, 605 Cliffe Street. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

Representatives of consultants SGE Acres Ltd., of Halifax and Marshall Macklin Monaghan, of Toronto, who have been commissioned by the City to develop the Master Plan, will be on-hand to answer questions and collect public feedback to be incorporated into their final report.

"This public consultation meeting is an important final component of SGE Acres work before their report is ultimately presented to City Council for consideration," said Councillor Bruce Grandy, who chairs the Community Services Committee. "I encourage the public to take advantage of this opportunity to learn about what work has been done so far and to have their comments included in the final report."

The consultants gave the Community Services Committee a progress report on the Master Plan development here today and outlined their vision for developing an integrated, city-wide network of trails, bikeways, parks, environmental and recreation corridors and city streets.

Work to-date has included consultation with key stakeholders including the Fredericton Trails Coalition and the City's Active Transportation Committee as well as a steering committee made up of representatives from the City's Community Services, Development Services and the Engineering and Public Works departments.

"The process is coming along very well," said Coun. Grandy. "When completed, this active transportation network will be a healthy and environmentally friendly way to move around the city. It will be attractive to residents and visitors alike and unique to the character and heritage of the City. I am very impressed with the work done so far."

Committee members were shown an exciting vision for utilizing the city's trails, roads and parks and green spaces. It envisions a sustainable, visible and connected network designed for human-powered transportation like walking, cycling, jogging and in-line skating.  The network will also be designed to include those with special needs and will be wheelchair-accessible wherever possible.

The final report will be presented to City Council once the comments received at the June 26 Public Meeting have been incorporated.
