Transit Master Plan Focus Group Will Meet April 7

Fredericton (April 2, 2008) - The City of Fredericton will host a Focus Group workshop on Monday, April 7, 2008, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. as part of the consultation process leading to a new Transit Master Plan for the municipality. The workshop will be held at Sir James Dunn Hall on the St. Thomas University campus.

"This workshop is open to anyone interested in contributing to the discussion about the current state of transit services in the city," said Councillor Marilyn Kerton, Chair of the City's Transportation Committee. "We are specifically looking for one or two representatives from each of the transit system stakeholder groups including: youth and seniors, business and economic development organizations, university and community colleges, major retailers and employers, other community agencies and interested members of the public."

Seating at this workshop is limited.  Organizations and individuals interested in attending should visit the Transit Master Plan website or contact organizers at transitstudy@fredericton.ca to reserve a seat.

Focus Group participants will receive information gathered to-date and will be asked to provide their input on the role that transit services should play over the next five to 10 years in Fredericton.

The public will have another opportunity to provide input into the Transit Master Plan at a Public Information Session to be held in late April.  The purpose of that session will be to present preliminary options, and obtain further public feedback, which will be used to make final recommendations.

The City is conducting the Transit Master Plan to evaluate its transit service, and, in consultation with stakeholders and the general public, map out the direction the transit system will take in the future.  Dillon Consulting Limited has been retained by the City to develop the Plan.  A Passenger Survey has already been completed to determine passenger characteristics and usage of the system, and obtain feedback from current transit users.

"A large component of the strategic plan involves consultation with transit passengers, system personnel, stakeholders, and the public to determine their views of the system," said Coun. Kerton. "This passenger survey and the focus group, as well as the public meeting in late April will all play important roles in helping guide the development of transit services in Fredericton for the next decade."
