Capital City Traffic Study Background Information

Study Purpose

Significant capital projects have been completed within Fredericton in recent years and the City continues to experience strong growth in the housing, commercial, industrial, and service sectors. 

The purpose of the Capital City Traffic Study is to develop an implementation plan of prioritized improvements that address current traffic issues, changes in infrastructure, and future travel demand.

Primary Objectives

  1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of traffic volumes and trip patterns within the City.
  2. Forecast the traffic impacts of future developments and changes to the street network using a computer model.
  3. Ientify locations that operate at unacceptable levels or are projected to operate at unacceptable levels over a period of 20 years.
  4. Evaluate the impacts of strategic improvements to address current deficiencies or future growth.
  5. Develop an implementation plan of prioritized improvements.

Study Phases

  • Phase I - Project Initialization and Information Gathering
  • Phase II - Update Existing Transportation Planning Model
  • Phase III - Establish Existing Traffic Situation
  • Phase IV - Traffic Forecasts and Improvement Analyses
  • Phase V - Project Presentation and Finalization

How can the Public Participate?

  • This first public input session is intended to raise awareness about the project and invite the public to identify issues, concerns, and suggestions.
  • A second public input session will take place later in the project to present improvements options intended to meet the existing and future traffic volumes.
  • At any point during the Study, the project team would be pleased to receive your additional written or oral input.

Major Issues and Concerns

  • Planning for future growth in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.
  • Managing congestion and delays at both bridges and improving traffic flow across the river.
  • Addressing congestion at the Regent Street/Prospect Street intersection.
  • Improving traffic flow on Regent Street in the Downtown Core.
  • Improving traffic flow along Main Street and Union Street.
  • Improving access between Ring Road and Two Nations Crossing.
  • Addressing safety concerns at intersections throughout the City.
  • Adequacy of pedestrian facilities in the Downtown Core.
