An effective recycling program can divert 30-40 percent of a household’s waste from landfills. To help residents maximize waste diversion and minimize their environmental impact, the City of Fredericton offers two recycling programs—a curbside pickup program for houses, and three recycling depots for residents of condominiums and apartments with more than four units.
Curbside pickup for homes
Fredericton’s curbside recycling program involves the use of both a “blue” box and a “grey” box. The blue box is for all plastic containers, plastic shopping bags, all refundable beverage containers (except glass), all tin, steel and aluminum food cans. The grey box* is for newspapers, flyers, magazines, catalogues, corrugated cardboard and boxboard, paper envelopes with or without windows, computer paper, scribblers, coloured and white bond paper, phonebooks, paperback books and textbooks.
(*In lieu of a “grey” box, residents may also use a blue box for paper-based products.)
The recycling truck collects each box on alternating weeks. Simply place the appropriate box for the week, full, at the curb before 7:00 a.m. on your regular garbage day.
Recycling boxes can be purchased from local retailers as long as they are made of durable plastic, no smaller than 45 litres and no larger than 60 litres, not the cylinder type or wheeled-cart type of container, and are clearly identified by their colour or labelling.
Recycling depots for multi-unit dwellings
The City of Fredericton operates three recycling depots for use by residents of apartments and multi-family dwellings. These depots can be found at:
- Capital Winter Club, 232 Rookwood Avenue – Parking lot on side of building
- Willie O’Ree Place – North corner of the main parking lot
- Brookside Mall Parking Lot - North edge fronting Reynolds
These depots complement the city's current blue and grey box curbside recycling program, and take the same recyclable materials.
NOTE: to recycle rechargeable and single use batteries, you may drop them off at several retail stores in the Fredericton Region, or at the Household Hazardous Waste depot.
For more information on either program, please contact the Recycling Hotline (453-9938) or Service Fredericton (460-2020).
