Fredericton is among Canada’s top-10 fastest growing CMAs (between 2022 and 2023)
On May 22, 2024, Statistics Canada released new population estimates for Fredericton City and the Fredericton Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) over a 12-month period. Please note that the numbers reported by Statistics Canada and the media do not include the new annexed areas of Fredericton added by Local Governance Reform (LGR); therefore Fredericton’s population figures are under-stated in the Census Profiles.
Fredericton City
Fredericton City’s population within the pre-annexation boundaries on July 1, 2023 increased to 69,406, up 2,878 residents (+4.3%) from 12 months previous. This is triple the annual population growth forecasted in the City’s Imagine Fredericton Growth Strategy. Note, 2022 growth was double the projected rate; therefore, the pace of growth is accelerating. |
The City estimates that an additional 4,500 people live in the newly annexed areas as of January 1,2023 due to LGR resulting in a current City population of approximately 74,000. |
Fredericton Metro (CMA)
The population increased to 119,059 in 2023, up 4,543, compared to 2022. |
The City captured over 63% of metro growth over 12 months, improving over 2022. |
Fredericton Metro recorded an estimated 1,779 immigrants from outside Canada from July 1, 2022 to July 1, 2023, up almost 50% from the year before. |
In addition to the new immigrants, another 1,884 net non-permanent residents arrived in Fredericton Metro to fill labour force needs. |
Migration from other provinces is beginning to decline from COVID record levels. Fredericton Metro gained 579 residents net from outside New Brunswick but within Canada. |
Fredericton Metro gained 350 people net from within New Brunswick, up from 2022. |
